Why create art?
Art should be experienced, yet it should also be examined. Understanding an artist's work, what state of mind they were in when they created it, and what their inspiration was, are as important to our initial visceral reaction to any work. What drove me to pursue science initially, in a particular field of cancer research, was a desire to contribute to humanity, a need to understand more about this immense mystery that is the human life. And a work of art, at it's best, can be a visual summary of what sets us apart from any other animal.
